Joe Alwyn opens about trusting Emma Stone during intimate scenes

Joe Alwyn places a great deal of confidence in his friend Emma Stone.

During a discussion with Entertainment Weekly about their latest movie, “Kinds of Kindness,” alongside co-stars Willem Dafoe and Jesse Plemons, the group explored various intimate scenes featured in the film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.

“Having done those scenes with Yogos as the director, I trust him and Emma,” Alwyn, 33, said, referencing his past work with the pair in 2018’s The Favourite. “That familiarity and trust is a huge part of it. If you are there with people that you trust and people that you admire and love, then it’s a whole lot easier.”

“Kinds of Kindness” follows Alwyn, Stone, and Plemons in distinct roles across three separate storylines. Towards the end of the film, Alwyn and Stone depict a couple going through separation struggles while trying to navigate co-parenting their daughter.

Alwyn remarked in the interview that Yorgos Lanthimos’s films often delve into uncomfortable territories and feature unsettling scenes, alluding to a particularly dark moment in the movie where his character exhibits sexually aggressive behavior.

“I certainly felt that with that darker scene, the tone on set doesn’t massively change,” he added. “It doesn’t feel like you’re in a dark environment. It’s all pretty light: People are friendly, people are joking.”
