President Asif Ali Zardari says late Journalist Professor Waris Mir was a proponent of democracy and his journalistic contributions will be remembered.

Speaking at the Waris Mir Memorial Seminar in Lahore today, Asif Ali Zardari highlighted the challenges posed by social media in the contemporary world.

He said that in the age of social media, it is easy to express one’s opinions to the world.

Asif Ali Zardari said that social media is being used to create opinions according to one’s own preferences.

He expressed regret that, unfortunately, grouping is evident on social media.

He urged people that they should not accept anything on social media that contradicts the facts. He said that a very strong lobby in the world is struggling to create division among Muslims through social media.

He stressed that social media should be used for the betterment of society.

President Asif Ali Zardari said that he firmly believes in the freedom of press and every effort is being made to ensure its independence.

He said that the Pakistan Peoples’ Party has a long list of sacrifices made by its leaders for standing the democratic process in the country.

He said that the country’s development is based on agricultural growth so steps are being taken for the promotion of this sector.

He also paid tribute to the late journalist Waris Mir, mentioning that Benazir Bhutto often sought his advice on important matters. 

The seminar was also addressed by Hamid Mir and Sohail Warrich.
