Mayor Karachi Race: Even after results of special seats, situation is unclear

KARACHI: Even after the results of the specific seats, no party has been able to get a simple majority of 179 votes for the mayor of Karachi.

Without Tehreek-e-Insaf, no party will be able to win the mayoral election. After the results of certain seats came out, the alignment for the mayoral battle in Karachi has intensified.

After the allotment of specific seats in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the People’s Party has come first and the Jamaat-e-Islami the second. Tehreek Labeek has a seat.

So far 10 UC Chairman and Vice Chairman have not been able to take oath, the situation will be clear on June 6 when successful councilors take oath on certain seats.

The notification of Union Committee No. 7 Sultanabad of Maripur Town of Kemari District has not been issued so far and the matter is in the court. On the other hand, returning officers have been appointed for the oath of mayor, deputy mayor and town chairmen. Who will be elected on June 15 and sworn in on June 19.

The People’s Party and its allies have 173 seats in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, while the alliance of Jamaat-e-Islami and PTI has 193 seats.

For the post of mayor, any party will need the support of 184 members in the first stage. If no one can get the required number of votes in the first stage, then in the second stage, the one who gets the majority of the members in the house will win the election of the mayor.

PPP sources claim that around two dozen elected chairmen of Tehreek-e-Insaaf are in touch with them and are ready to support the nominee of the People’s Party.

So far, no chairman of Tehreek-e-Insaf has made a clear announcement about it. If the elected representatives of Jamaat-e-Islami and Tehreek-e-Insaaf remain united, then the joint nominee of Jamaat-e-Islami, Hafiz Naeemur Rahman, is likely to be elected as mayor easily.
