
International Literacy Day is being observed across the globe today.
The theme of this year is Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies’.
Meanwhile in separate messages on International Literacay Day, the Secretary Literacy Department Punjab Syed Haider Iqbal and DG Literacy Dr Khurram Shehzad have said that World Literacy Day is a day to highlight the importance of education.
The purpose of celebrating this day is to make all sections of the society to aware of the need for education and prepare them to prioritize the education of themselves and their generations by keeping the resources high.
They said that Literacy Day is being celebrated with determination to increase efforts to bring 7.1 million out-of-school children in schools in the province.
In this context, they are trying to remove the lack of awareness regarding education and for the literacy of children and people who are deprived of education due to poverty or overage.
They said that more than 80 million people are illiterate in the country and the number of out-of-school children in Pakistan is 22.8 million.
They said that Literacy Department Punjab is using all of its resources to meet this challenge.
They expressed their determination to increase the number of literacy centers and widen the scope of measures to bring out-of-school as well as over-age children to literacy centers and informed that there are more than 20 thousand non-formal schools in Punjab.
More than 5 lac children are being put through the process of basic education in literacy centers.
The Literacy Department is focusing on increasing the number of literacy centers and enrolling more out-of-school children.
