Gas sector is losing 1 billion per day, price will increase: Minister of Energy

ISLAMABAD: The caretaker Federal Minister for Energy, Muhammad Ali, has said in his statement that the process of reforms for power plants, including power distribution companies (DISCOs), is ongoing. The government is more focused on DISCOs. Under the first proposal, privatization of discos is under consideration and the Ministry of Energy and Privatization Commission will work together for the process of privatization.

Federal Energy Minister Muhammad Ali said that under the second proposal, long-term concessions should be given to discos for 20 to 25 years, under which the management of discos should be given to the private sector for 20 to 25 years.

Federal Energy Minister Muhammad Ali said in a briefing regarding the power sector today that the work related to the increase in gas prices is in progress.

Federal Energy Minister Muhammad Ali said that the gas sector is losing one billion rupees daily and the revolving debt of the gas sector is 28 to 29 billion rupees.

Federal Minister of Energy Muhammad Ali said that price increase is inevitable for the improvement of gas sector, 60% of consumers will be protected for price increase and efforts are being made to ensure that poor consumers are not burdened by more than 500. While the increase in gas prices will be more for the rich class, the process of reforms for power plants including electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) is going on. Under the first proposal, the privatization of discos is under consideration and the Ministry of Energy and the Privatization Commission will work together for the privatization process. According to the second proposal, long-term concessions should be given to the discos for 20 to 25 years, under which the management of the discos should be given to the private sector for 20 to 25 years.
